On The Winding Road

I once found this quote by Joseph Campbell in the Brené Brown book Braving the Wilderness: “If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it’s not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take. That’s why it’s your path.”

I’ve been lucky enough to be putting those words to the test, and have found my path to be a bit winding. I feel a strong sense that I’m on my way to where I want to be, that I’m on course. But boy have I taken some turns that were hard to explain. Starts and stops, experiments that might have seemed wasted, and forward momentum that somehow translated into inches gained instead of yards.

Truth be told I’m grateful for the gradual progression, as long as I can trust the feeling that tells me I’m truly on my way. An unhurried journey is exactly how I would want it — I just need a reminder of that from time to time, when an urgency to already be at the finish line presses in on me.

This artwork represents being on that kind of winding path. Have you experienced something similar?

A little about my work

I had been developing as an artist for years before the craft of stained glass caught my interest. Then as I started taking classes in glass work, it just seemed so right, like I'd finally found the medium I'd been looking for.

Because I came to glass work from the perspective of a painter rather than that of a window builder, my work is distinct from other stained glass. My pieces are designed to show their beauty by reflecting and bending interior lighting. I've come to refer to my work simply as 'glass art' because if I use the phrase 'stained glass,' people think it must be placed in a window. Not so! Hang it on a wall or place it on an end table, and see the beauty it shows you.

My wall-hanging pieces show best when they have light to reflect back at you. Ambient light from windows works great, or lamplight after the sun goes down. The shadows cast on the surface behind add depth to what your eyes take in.

My free-standing pieces combine the beauty of reflected light with the airy feel of light passing through. These show well just about anywhere, standing on their own or layered in front of other items, and can even be placed at a window if you want that back-lit touch.

Something special for you

You don't have to live inside a museum or a design magazine to enjoy the touch of modern elegance brought by my handcrafted pieces. You're busy and hard-working, and your spaces reflect that. Still, you know a little class can make a real difference, which is why you'll love the way my free-standing glass artwork catches eyes on a nightstand, desk, or bookshelf.
